چکیده
If changes in the composition of the soil microbial community alter the physiological capacity of the community then such changes may have ecosystem consequences. We examined the relationships among community composition (PLFA), microbial biomass (CFDE), substrate utilization profiles (BIOLOG), lignocellulose degrading enzyme activities (b-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, b-xylosidase, phenol oxidase, peroxidase), and nutrient releasing enzyme activities (phosphatase, sulphatase) in a Tropeptic Haplustol soil. The soils supported a tropical forest and pineapple plantations of varying ages that were at different stages within the management cycle. Conversion from forest to agriculture significantly decreased %C and %N of the soil by 50–55%, microbial biomass by 75%, b-glucosidase by 54%, sulphatase activity by 85%, decreased Ca, Mg, and Mn availability, and produced compositionally and functionally distinct microbial communities. Total enzyme activities were generally correlated with %C, %N, microbial biomass and, occasionally with community composition. We calculated the specific activities of the enzymes assayed (enzyme activity per unit microbial biomass C) in order to normalize activity to the size of the microbial community. Values for enzyme specific activities were more highly correlated with community composition than were total enzyme activities. In addition, BIOLOG was not correlated with community composition or enzyme activities. Enzyme activities and specific activities may provide a useful linkage between microbial community composition and carbon processing. q 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the Baltic Sea, peptidase and alkaline phosphatase activities always show the same pattern in nutrient gradients: increasing enzyme activities with decreasing dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphate. The field experiments reported here suggest that peptidase activity may be regulated by DIN in a manner similar to that of alkaline phosphatase by phosphate. In nutrient gradients estab...

Soil enzyme activities are considered to be sensitive to pollution and have been proposed as indicators for measuring the degree of soil degradation. In this work we found that in three galician soils exposed to various degrees of pollution by tanning effluent, hydrocarbons or landfill effluent, the changes in the activities of individual enzyme did not allow precise quantification of soil degr...

Phenolic compounds are intermediary transformation products of many naturally occurring substances and synthetic chemicals, including crop residues, organic wastes, pesticides and industrial products. They are suitable substrates for the phenolases and peroxidases produced by the soil microflora. Although measurement of the enzymatic oxidation of phenolic compounds is an important measure of th...

Dielectric properties, including linear (refractive index) and second-order nonlinear optical responses, of LiNb12yTayO3-type mixed single crystals with y 0:00; 0.81, 0.92, 0.97, and 1.00 have been quantitatively studied. Based on the corresponding crystal compositions, the chemical bond method was applied. The results show that the dielectric susceptibilities at 1.064 mm decrease remarkably ...

The preparation and characterisation of synthetic enzyme complexes simulating those usually encountered in soil were investigated. Complexes were prepared at 308C by the interaction of acid phosphatase and tannic acid in the presence and absence of Fe and Mn ions (as chlorides) and oxides, with and without montmorillonite. In comparison with phosphatase–tannic acid complexes, the enzymatic comp...
